The Native Nations Institute at the University of Arizona in the United States has launched a new “Rebuilding Native Nations: Strategies for Governance and Development” distance learning course series.
Aboriginal communities in NSW are being invited to take part in a new Local Decision Making governance model as part of the NSW government’s OCHRE initiative.
On 18-19 April 2013, the Aboriginal Peak Organisations of NT (APONT) held a Aboriginal Governance Summit in Tennant Creek to discuss Aboriginal governance priorities and share ideas about what works.
On 30 November 2012, Social Justice Commissioner Mick Gooda released the 2012 Social Justice and Native Title Reports in Sydney. Both reports focus on what constitutes effective governance in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, including looking closely at government action in the Northern Territory (Social Justice Report) and Prescribed Bodies Corporate as an example of effective Indigenous Governance (Native Title Report).
On 13 February 2013, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People’s Recognition Bill 2012 passed unanimously through the House of Representatives. The bill then passed through the Senate in March.
On 6 February 2013, the Prime Minister presented her annual Closing the Gap Statement and tabled the fifth annual Closing the Gap Report in Parliament.
