AIGI’s Emerging Directors Program provides

1. Support, mentorship, and fostering professional development for emerging leaders in governance.

2. Hands-on learning opportunities through observing and participating in effective governance practices 

3. Exposure to culturally empowering networks, with the guidance of your assigned mentor, and access to valuable networking opportunities.

4. Education and professional development through training and workshop content.

Key Information

The Emerging Directors Program develops the next generation of capable First Nations directors, strengthening Indigenous governance through education, mentorship, and culturally empowering practices. Participants will gain the knowledge, skills, and networks to excel as governance leaders, contributing to the long-term sustainability of Indigenous organisations and making a meaningful impact across the broader Australian landscape. 

About You

 

  • You identify as Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander & are over 18 years old
  • You want to develop leadership skills and contribute to Indigenous communities, organisations, and nations.
  • You are ready to fully participate in sessions, mentoring, and workshops, including travel if needed.
  • You are eager to learn and apply governance skills.

Key Features

Mentorship:

  • Six sessions with an experienced mentor, including pre- and post-meeting preparation and a career conversation.

Observership:

  • Attend at least 2 board meetings to learn governance practices firsthand.

Workshops & Training:

  • Two in-person, two-day workshops.
  • Online training sessions.

Networking:

  • Engage with peers, mentors, and external partners.

 

Application process

  • Apply: Applications close early March each year.
  • Application Assessment: AIGI will assess eligibility of applications and shortlist in March.
  • Shortlisting: Depending on the number of applications we may invite you to answer further questions.
  • Application Outcome: We will inform you of the outcome of your application by the 11th of April.
  • Induction: Attend a pre-program information session on the 11th of June.

What is the Emerging Directors Program?

The Emerging Directors Program is an educational initiative designed specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people interested in building their knowledge of governance foundations.  

 

The program aims to empower participants with the skills and understanding needed to contribute confidently and effectively as directors on boards or in other governance roles.

What topics are covered in the program?

Key topics include (but are not limited to): 

  • Two-way governance and Indigenous governance excellence

How long is the program, and how is it delivered?

The 2025-2026 program will go for approximately 10 months.

What are the benefits of completing the program?

Participants gain:

Is there a cost to participate?

The Emerging Director Program is designed to minimise or eliminate out-of-pocket expenses for participants. Travel costs, including flights and accommodation, will be arranged for both in-person sessions (launch and close). Participants may also be eligible for reimbursement of parking and mileage, depending on their travel requirements. 

 

If participants wish to make additional travel arrangements as part of the program, they must discuss this with AIGI to confirm whether the associated costs will be covered. In such cases, participants may incur some out-of-pocket expenses. 

Are there any assessments or assignments in the program?

The program includes practical activities, such as: 

  • Case studies
  • Group discussions
  • Governance simulations i.e. mock board meetings 

These are designed to reinforce learning but are not graded. There are no formal exams or assignments. 

What type of boards or roles does this program prepare participants for?

The program is tailored to prepare participants for a variety of governance roles, including: 

  • Boards of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations
  • Community organisations and not-for-profits
  • Advisory committees
  • Corporate boards
Are there networking opportunities during the program?

Yes! The program includes opportunities to network with: 

  • Experienced directors and governance professionals
  • Program mentors and facilitators
  • Other participants who share similar goals and interests
How does the program accommodate participants from remote areas?

The program offers: 

  • Online learning modules accessible from anywhere
  • Supported travel and accommodation for in person sessions
What kind of mentors will I have access to?

Participants will be paired with experienced mentors, including: 

  • Current Indigenous directors and/ or directors of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations
  • Governance experts with extensive board experience
  • Leaders who understand the unique challenges and opportunities of Indigenous governance
Program Applications & Eligibility
How do I apply for the program?

Applications can be submitted through this form found here. The process involves: 

  1. Proving some basic information about yourself i.e. name, date of birth, occupation. 
  2. Answering some longer questions intended to showcase your interest and eligibility in the program. This can be done via written answer or submitting a video of yourself. 
  3. Please submit your application by the 2nd of March 2025. 
  4. Should we receive a large number of applications you may be asked to answer a few more questions about your application to assist us with the shortlisting process.
Who is eligible to participate in the program?

The program is open to: 

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are aspiring, new, or existing directors. 
  • Those who are interested in learning more about governance principles and practices. 
  • Individuals with a commitment to serving their community or communities through leadership or board roles. 
  • Are over 18
Do I need prior governance or board experience to join?
  • No, prior experience is not required. 
  • This program is ideal for individuals early in their governance journey, whether new to governance or looking to strengthen foundational skills.
Can I join if I am already a director?
  • Yes, but the program is tailored for those with limited governance experience. 
  • Experienced directors may find the content familiar, but it can serve as a helpful refresher, particularly for newly appointed directors. 
How many spots are available for the program?

As the Emerging Director Program is still in its early stages, we currently have 10 spots available through this application process. 

 

As the program grows, we aim to expand the number of participants, ensuring that more people who can benefit from this initiative have the opportunity to take part. 

Post Program
Will I receive a certificate upon completion?

Yes, participants who complete the program will receive a certificate acknowledging their achievement. 

How does the program support participants after completion?

We keep in touch with our Emerging Director Alumni and are always excited to hear what new initiatives and opportunities they are taking on post-program completion. Likewise, we keep our alumni up to date with new opportunities that come up at AIGI.

 

As the program grows, we hope to expand our alumni network. Watch this space. 

What is the goal after the program?

The goal after completing the program is for participants to feel confident and equipped to apply their governance knowledge and leadership skills in ways that are meaningful to them. We encourage participants to explore opportunities such as director roles, advisory group memberships, or other governance-related positions that align with their individual interests and aspirations. 

 

That said, there is no requirement or expectation to immediately pursue a specific role. The program’s primary aim is to empower participants with the tools, networks, and confidence to contribute to strong governance practices, whether that happens right away or as part of their longer-term journey. Ultimately, the goal is for participants to feel prepared to make a positive impact when they’re ready to step into governance or leadership roles.

What happens if I need to withdraw from the program?

Participants who need to withdraw due to unforeseen circumstances can discuss options with the program coordinator. Depending on the timing and reason, deferral to the following year’s cohort may be possible. Alternatively, their details can be kept on file to reconnect ahead of a future cohort.
