Celebrating a Trans-Tasman Partnership: Māori and Australian First Nations Governance Leaders Unite...
Recently, the AIGI team and Board came together in person on Gadigal Country in Sydney. The week-long gathering provided a valuable opportunity to connect, share stories and collaborate side-by-side as we continue our work supporting self-determined Indigenous governance across Australia.
Throughout the week, staff and Board collaborated to reflect, re-orient and strengthen our approach to effective governance as we look ahead to 2026. These conversations and shared experiences were grounded in AIGI’s commitment to strong, culturally informed governance that supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and organisations.
A highlight of the week was spending time on the Tribal Warrior harbour cruise. The team deeply appreciated the opportunity to learn about Aboriginal history in Sydney Harbour and to strengthen our understanding of place, history and connection in the region through First Nations perspectives.
We also gathered with honoured guests for a gala evening focused on storytelling and relationship-building. We were pleased to welcome some of AIGI’s founding Board members, as well as colleagues from Community Governance Aotearoa, who travelled from Aotearoa to join us. Their presence reinforced the importance of relationships, shared learning and Indigenous-led governance across contexts.
In addition, AIGI staff participated in in-depth cultural awareness training delivered by Mirri Mirri. The training was an extremely valuable experience for the team, providing a safe and engaging space to learn, share stories and deepen connections with one another.
These moments of coming together are central to how we work as a team at the Australian Indigenous Governance Institute, strengthening how we lead and support strong Indigenous governance now and into the future.
